Pre-Order Calico Review here.
Calico Review is Allah-Las’ third album (their first for Mexican Summer) since the band’s auspicious formation in 2008. Indeed, the lessons learned by the Allah-Las – guitarists Miles Michaud and Pedrum Siadatian, bassist Spencer Dunham, drummer Matthew Correia – have been tempered with experience, transforming this time into wisdom. The band’s trajectory, formed around mutual appreciation for the same kinds of music and a host of shared experiences, focuses on both the outer trappings of their home and surroundings, and the through line of darkness that suffuses life in LA county.

Where the Allah-Las display their insight, and what really shines across the 12 songs that comprise Calico Review, is the way that the group has pivoted from specific influences and nods to the music they love, to crafting the feelings of freedom, grit, and melancholy in their music. That feeling – the peerless capture of music long in the tradition and mood of California pop, the sound that’s captured the essence of the LA experience – aligns with their stylistic technique and their experience in the studio environment to create their strongest album to date.

Calico Review bears the mark of four students becoming the teachers, sharing the sentiments of the town they call home. Join them. There’s a lot to learn.

Don’t Miss These Northside Festival Shows!

Now in it’s eighth year, Northside Festival has made a name for itself as an event where attendees can see emerging new acts as well as all-time favorites, all in the same city block. The festival takes over essentially every venue in Williamsburg and Greenpoint, aka the North side of Brooklyn. Thus, Northside’s namesake.

Mexican Summer is being represented by two of our killer artists, Weyes Blood and Pill. Weyes Blood performs a solo set at Music Hall of Williamsburg with Psychic Ills on Saturday night. Pill plays two shows, first taking the stage at Bushwick venue Alphaville on Saturday, then at Palisades on Sunday. If you haven’t yet seen Pill perform live, this is a great time to do so; the band’s new single “Medicine” received praise from outlets including NPR Music and Pitchfork, and are gearing up to release a debut LP Convenience later this summer.

Weyes Blood at Music Hall of Williamsburg on 6/11

Pill at Alphaville on 6/11

Pill at Palisades on 6/12

Pill Announces Debut LP Alongside Video For “Medicine”

Convenience is Brooklyn quartet Pill’s debut album for Mexican Summer. It explodes through a field of emotional and political upheaval, where something that makes life easier for one group of people might make life harder for another. Call Pill post-punk, call them No wave; Convenience is more modern-day folk or protest music for the conflicted confines that New York City has become.

Rally behind the unrestrained sound of four musical conspirators — Veronica Torres, Andrew Spaulding, Benjamin Jaffe, and Jon Campolo — bonded by Convenience’s concepts of “physicality, catharsis, and psychic release.”

Take a wild ride on Pill’s looney tunes tour van in “Medicine,” the first video from Convenience. Artist and director Buddy Melvin Milton Croissant III transforms footage from the band’s Southwestern tour into a glorious neon toxic wasteland.
